The Wintour Collection

I’ve known about Anna Wintour for a long time now.  My fascination with her are grown over the years as I matured more and so did my interest in fashion and media.  Ever since I was 11, I had a strong desire to be an editor of a major fashion magazine. My first subscription was to Young & Modern and in the 5th grade I created and wrote the class newsletter all by myself. My brief stint in childhood modeling was really my first lite taste of the fashion industry and I found it all very strange. Still, in high school, my subscriptions grew on what meager money I had to include teen versions of major magazines and I excelled in photography and yearbook.

I’ve always have a passion for writing.  In college, I majored in English journalism and continued writing for student publications and furthered my subscription. I never saw the end of print publication coming — as tech crazy as I can be — because I still devoutly subscribe to print editions of all periodicals.  I put my editor dreams on pause when I learned how much I hated reporting and when I saw the demise of the industry.  Still, the desire to be EIC never really waned inside me. So what does this have to do with Anna?

I just finally saw The September Issue, a documentary style film chronicling the months leading up to the creation of the September edition of American Vogue.  With Anna at the head, and Grace Coddington as creative director, the issues trudges along through editorials, meetings and months of trend reporting. We get to see Sienna test and shoot for the cover, and Grace cringe on the sidelines at the thought of models no longer being on covers.  If you can’t tell, I loved the movie.  It reinvigorated my love for magazine production and my need to write, produce, and create beautifully crafted and well written pieces. The little power girl in me is still longing to be a part of that world, dead or not.  I admire Anna greatly for the things she has been able to accomplish and even if you don’t like her you can’t really argue with her simply because of her years in the industry.

And so today, I’ve begun cleaning out my bookshelf and filling them with my magazines instead of my books. Long live the fashion magazines. Oh, and bring back the models.

The “Sex Sells” Syndrome in American Business!

Male-created religious doctrines designed to control the sexual behavior of females have had results that the founders probably could not have imagined in their own time—or if they did recognize them they chose to ignore them for a variety of reasons.

One of the most disastrous of the measures imposed upon both men and women but especially women was limiting sexual behavior to the point that most individuals spent much of their lives in a state of sexual frustration caused by a build-up of sexual energy that could not be expended.

Until contemporary times even masturbation, especially by males, was regarded as a major sin against God and was punished by a variety of means, including things that were demeaning and often cruel. [One Bible author says it is better for a male to leave his seed in the belly of a whore than to masturbate!].

The results of this misunderstanding and misuse of human sexuality included both emotional and physical ailments that still today continue plague much of mankind…and historically have also resulted in thriving prostitution industries in most countries. [It is just now finally being recognized by a few “experts” that unused sexual energy in males is responsible for much of the violence in societies.]

When education and other forms of enlightenment began to loosen some of the religious restraints on sexual attitudes and behavior in the United States, businessmen were quick to pick up on and exploit the area of human sexuality that was the most abused, most constrained—and that, of course, was female sexuality.

Advertisements began to feature attractive women in seductive poses and various states of undress. By the 1950s most marketing programs in the country were based on the appeal of female sexuality. And in the following decades female sexuality-related ads began to appear in Japan and other Asian countries.

Well before the end of the 20th century the level of sexuality portrayed in American advertisements of all kinds and in every medium had reached the level of soft pornography. By the beginning of the 21st century many marketing programs had reached the level of semi-hard porn to attract attention to products…and hard-core porn had become a staple of movies and television shows.

Another fallout from the misunderstanding and misuse of human sexuality is the declining custom of marriage and the increase in children born out of wedlock…both of which have a powerful, negative effect on the stability of societies and the quality of life.

This sexual revolution—again caused by the mostly well-intentioned attempts of religious doctrines to limit sexual behavior and channel it into narrow confines—is still in its early stages. Where and how far it will go remains to be seen. I have presented evidence for one possible short-term scenario in EROS’ REVENGE – Brave New World of American Sex!, available from www.Amazon.com.
