Ottobre Woman — wrap contest!

About three or four years ago I discovered Ottobre Design and their wonderful pattern magazine. As my kids are well out of their children’s sizes, I just subscribe to Ottobre Woman, which comes out twice a year. (There are also four issues a year of children’s patterns.) The autumn/winter issue just arrived, and features this interesting wrap:

Ottobre Woman, Autumn/Winter 5/2010

The wrap can be worn at least eight different ways as pictured on their blog. It can take a basic outfit and pump it up to “wow” which is great for work. With a long-sleeve t-shirt and a knit wrap, I can be as comfy as if I’m wearing pajamas but look dressy for work. This I like! :-D

I love this issue! I’ve been looking for a pattern for a nice, classic, princess-line long wool coat. Check. (They also have it in a shorter jacket style.) I’ve also wanted some classic pants for work (check), and some nice blouses and tops for work (double-check), and I’ve been losing weight and need some cute workout wear (check again)! I love everything offered in my size in this issue. (I also love it that my size is now smaller, LOL!) :-D

They are holding a drawing for a wrap and tunic made to your measurements, and two viscose/wool wraps! Enter by commenting at their blog, http://ottobredesign.blogspot.com/.

(Today’s message was brought to you by Ottobre Design and the letters “O” and “D”.)

London Calling with Guest Stylist Achariya Maktoum

achariya maktoum_004.jpg

With Achariya wearing the Union Jack jacket from Arai, I could not resist going to the The Clash for their iconic song London Calling. We headed to Virtual Decay, an urban sim, for the photoshoot.

London calling to the faraway towns
Now that war is declared-and battle come down
London calling to the underworld
Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls

achariya maktoum_001.jpg

London calling, now don’t look at us
All that phoney Beatlemania has bitten the dust
London calling, see we ain’t got no swing
‘Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing

Fashion Forward and Back

There’s a Star Trek episode I remember—trekky anyone?—in which Harry Mudd’s dangerous androids are defused by being told that they are being told lies, so they can’t figure out what’s true. In an admittedly obscure way, that’s what this video reminds me of. It’s so very vintage to me, but to the ladies and gentlemen who created these clothes, it was forward looking; they were inspired by the near, and long-term, future. I wonder if our love of vintage is as much a curiosity about what lies ahead as it is an appreciation for what came before… Or does that not compute?

Coats & jackets

This autumn brings with it an exciting range of coats & jackets…

Getting Chills

Ice Tray (I really need one and cannot find one anywhere!)

There was finally a slight chill in the air this morning when I left for work! So, I’m getting chills thinking about the delights of Autumn while trying to ignore the inevitable disappointments like earlier sunsets, frigid cold and…Winter. Plus, Shop-o-matic (by NYMag) has released a 100 Reasons to Get Excited for Fall edition.  Of course I have some favorites. Find all of them here.

I can always use another wine stopper…

Decanter and sipping glasses for cold nights by the fire

I <3 Cheese

As I said here, I’m digging skinny cargo trend, the above are from Old Navy

The must-have accessory for dance parties: iPhone speakers

Lovely little dress from H&M

$72 cut-out dress from Fred Flare. I. Want. It.

Suede Stillettos. Mmmmm.

Gargoyle rings!

Chambray shirt. I have a vintage work shirt that I can’t wait to bust out.

Dish drainer. For those that don’t have a dishwasher, like me.

Biker leggings. Umm. I must say I dig on these. This version is by Tory Burch and is above my current price point for pants I will only occasionally wear…but I will be looking for knock-offs…oh yes, I will.

Sauce pot. Getting hungry now. “Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah” is for some reason playing in my head…

Tall boot by Cole Haan, again out of my price point but I am equally excited to wear my less expensive, less chic tall boots.

I’m dying over this fuschia sofa from Ikea. Sooo delicious! And only $200 more than the Cole Haan boots!

Leopard scarf. I’m in.

Detachable Ruffle Collar. Actually detachable collars in general. I will be in search.

As previously stated here, I’m a bootie-hound!

Shearling jacket. Or in my case faux-shearling jacket.

Make Way For Women’s Leather Jackets

Stylish, women’s jackets speak of fashion. Women wear them to show their personality and express their attitude. They come in different styles ranging from blazers, overcoats, reversible, outerwear to suede ones They are also offered in different sizes: the hip, full, 3/4 lengths. Variations in the styles have been added to make it more fashionable and to fill a woman’s heart content.

The motorcycle jackets are the latest find in the fashion world of womens jackets. Celebrities have followed this trend as well as ordinary women in their daily apparel. As this type of jacket has the traditional and classical style, it can be worn on top of almost anything. They are, at present, giving other jackets a very stiff competition.

The leather blazer jacket is good for business casual environment. They are also nice for a classy bar setting or a night club.

Great for parties, school, leisure time, and for almost anything (except formal occasions) is the black leather jacket. It is also pretty nice to wear this kind of leather jacket on top of a sweet pretty dress.

Closely resembling a hip length is the bomber jacket. It has a square look and is ordinarily fur-insulated. It also has two large pockets in front, and flexible waist and cuffs. A lot are double breasted and with fur from the collar down to the front of the jacket.

There is a common style variation in all leather jackets. They normally have buttons or a zipper. A lot of them have belts. Hoods can sometimes be removable and may or may not be insulated.

Leather jackets may be made of conventional or suede leather. Suede is a soft, smooth type of leather. Although it looks nice, it is not as long-lasting as that of the regular leather, and is at risk to water damage.

As you may know, leather is expensive. So if you really want to buy that leather jacket, make sure that when you buy one it is worth your every cent.

Denim Jackets - Always in Style

Denim jackets have been on the fashion scene for decades, and though they have been constantly changing they have yet to actually go out of style. The same can be said of denim jeans, which are constantly going through new reiterations but still continue to be worn by people all across the world. And just like jeans that are made of denim, jackets that are made of it are also made in a huge variety of styles.

Denim jackets were initially made popular and revolutionized by Levi’s. While those made of Levi’s are still around and still popular today, other brands have taken steak on the market and they just as high quality and attractive jackets as the denim ones made by Levi’s. Some of them are even higher quality, the those must be specifically sought out. It is all too easy to go to a department store and see a jacket made of denim only for it to be poorly made and too thin.

While ideally, then jackets will be relatively thin, there is a limit to how thin is good. Those that are not made of durable denim can rip easily and will not be able to keep you warm in the cold. Both of these reasons make it essential for you to find a good jacket made of denim that will be just thick enough to be able to withstand any abuse that it may go through and still look good, not to mention need to be warm.

Besides the qualities that are so varying these days, the styles that you can find come in a magnitude of varieties. There are huge amount of pocket styles, these styles, general shape styles, collar styles, and shades. Just about any outfit that you would wear that is casual you could most likely wear with one of these jackets. This makes them extremely versatile and worth having in your wardrobe, even if you are not sure right now what you would wear them with just get — you will know eventually.

While some people think of the 50s bad boys when they think of these jackets, other people think of the types that were around 80s. Both of these styles are good in their own right, but they look nothing like the ones that you can find today. While there are some styles that are labeled specifically as being retro, most of the ones that you will find today are purely modern. Denim jackets come a long way in the past 60 years, and they are constantly changing. Finding the perfect one for your wardrobe or specific outfit is easier than ever, especially with the large amount of choices that you have in them they
