The fashion runway peep show

I don't even know how to explain this fashion disaster... well, I say fashion because it is a fashion show, but clothes, are few and far in between. One of the men even came out naked with only a towel. What exactly was he modeling? So, not sure if this was meant as a fashion show or a peep show for gay men... but it is entertaining. Watch the people in the audience chuckle.

This is an older show, 1997, I think, but wowo!

Amy Winehouse to rock London Fashion Week!

Nah... we don't mean to tell you that Amy Winehouse will be staging a rock show at the London Fashion Week. Instead, she is all set to be a fashion model and do the catwalk on the ramp!

Unbelievable but true :-)

To the horror of many fashion critics, British designer Julien Macdonald has roped in Amy to appear in his show at the prestigious London Fashion Week in September.

Not withstanding her stint in rehabs, In February, French fashion house Louis Vuitton offered Amy £500,000 to appear at their show during Paris Fashion Week.

Apparently, Amy Winehouse is on a roll since she picked up several Grammy Awards recently. She is also rumoured to have bagged a private gig worth £1 million ($2.05 million) to perform in an old Russian bus garage to promote a yet to be launched art gallery.

hey magazine, get out of my head

What I love about this advertisement is that it makes fun of itself without even realizing it.

"Stick your head in a magazine," urges the ad, "and some of that pretty lady will rub right onto you. Trust us, you just need to keep it real close and for a very long time."

Right.

There used to be a comedy program, Four on the Floor, with a character named Mr. Canoe-head (yes, only in Canada would this be popular). Mr. Canoe-head tried to carry out a regular life with a canoe permanently resting on his shoulders. If he had a real head under there, we never saw it.

As a child, I found this hilarious, wondering how Mr. Canoe-head could ever tie his shoes or buy a candy bar at the store with a giant piece of fiberglass covering his eyes.

Thanks to the beauty industry, we now have Mrs. Magazine-head: the ideal female consumer.

Ha, ha, watch Mrs. Magazine-head trying to take a shower, get an education, and raise a family with a magazine affixed to her face.

The punch line, which cosmetic, accessory, fashion and make-up marketers already know is that Mrs. Magazine-head can never lead a normal life because she can't see beyond their products.

So, who’s making fun of who now?

Jourdan Dunn

Jourdan Dunn (August 3rd 1990- ) is a British model from London. Now 17, some say she is set to become the next Naomi Campbell, the next big black supermodel. She will be on the cover of the July 2008 issues of both American Vogue and Italian Vogue. The Italian one will be the first all-black Vogue ever.

In 2008 she became the first black woman in 11 years to model for Prada. The last one before her was Naomi Campbell in 1997.

She has helped to turn modelling away from the issue of weight towards that of race. As someone said, she has made black the new black

Dunn is in great demand: she has been on dozens of catwalks in London, Paris, Milan and New York in the past year. She started modelling only in February 2007.

She was discovered in 2006 by the Storm model agency, the same one that found Kate Moss. They discovered Dunn in a Primark in Kings Mall in London trying on sunglasses with her friend.

She is from the Greenford part of West London, where she lived with her mother and two younger brothers. Her heroes growing up were Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell. People thought she was simple-minded when she told them she wanted to be a model.

Now in 2008 she lives in New York and is with the Women Management agency.

Even though the fashion industry is Hitler white, casting directors and clothes designers have been falling over each other to have her model for them. It seems they like her presence and grace, the way her long neck, eyes and high cheekbones give her an otherworldly look.

She has noticed the lack of women of colour in the fashion industry:

London's not a white city, so why should all our castings be white? I go to castings and see several black and Asian girls, then I get to the show and look around and there's just me and maybe one other coloured face. They just don't get picked. I hope it's because the designer just didn't think they were good enough as a model, but I don't know.

She wants to do something about it when she gets older:

I'm really ambitious. When I go back into education, I'm going to do business studies. Naomi's idea is good; I'd do an agency for black girls and Asian and Spanish, because there aren't enough of them on the runway either.

She is 5 foot 10 (1.78 metres). Her measurements are 33-24-35 inches (83-60-89 cm), giving her a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.67. She says her best feature is her legs.

She says, "I am one of those lucky people who can eat anything and don't put on weight."

She seems like a sweet, down-to-earth girl who has not let her sudden success go to her head. At least not yet.

She is friends with Emanuela de Paula of Brazil and Honorine Uwera of Rwanda.

On television she likes to watch "The Eastenders".

Plus size clothing to rescue fashion industry!

For long, there has been a raging debate on how thin the fashion models should be and if being thin involves health risks like anorexia as models try to starve themselves to be wafer thin and hence, more salable.

An interesting point has been made by Burt P. Flickinger III, managing director of New York-based Strategic Resource Group, a consumer industry consulting firm, who says -

Thin models may be synonymous with high fashion but right now it's fatties who are saving the fashion industry's skinny ass. Ironically, obesity is saving American fashion!

The American fashion industry seems to have hit a bad patch with the apparel retailers feeling the pinch as there is a trend in consumers where they are compensating for higher food and fuel prices by cutting down on non-essential purchases like new clothes.

In Canada, a similar trend is being noticed and can be corroborated with the fact that in the last six months, two clothing chains, Zacks Fashions and Mademoiselle Charmante, went bust, closing the doors on more than 70 shops.

However, many Americans are today finding they have to buy new clothes in plus size as their waists expand with age, overeating or lack of exercise. And when their existing dresses start to get a little too tight, shopping for new plus size clothes and plus size lingerie becomes a necessity, not an optional luxury.

Mr. Flickinger further says,

"The fast food industry is definitely supporting the fashion industry. The more fast food, the more dashboard and desktop dining, the bigger and fatter people become and that's fabulous for the fashion industry. Consumers with fluctuating weight who have to change sizes, first upsizing their wardrobes and then, with any luck, downsizing, represent the one bright spot for the fashion industry in these trying times".

This sure seems to be an insider's view of things, one who is expert at what he is talking about. What is your opinion on this insight, folks? :-)
