Dress for the Weather

It amazes me when I see a teen in a tee-shirt and hooded sweatshirt in twenty degree weather.  Then they come in the house and wrap up in blankets to try to warm back up.

I like to keep the thermostat on sixty-eight degrees during the day and sixty-five at night. I only have one thing to say to them…dress for the weather!

Simplicity 3529 with design alterations

So here goes the story ………..

My friend Sheena had a bit of a fashion dilemma.  Hubby had a new job and they were due to attend his work’s Christmas party.  She wanted to look good in front of his colleagues but couldn’t find a thing to wear.

One morning she plonked a catalogue down on my desk and pointed to this dress …

“What do you think?” she asked.

“The dress is quite nice” I replied “but I don’t think it’s your colour”.

“I’m not keen on the colour myself” she said “and I don’t really like the hem either, but it’s the only dress I’ve seen that’s anywhere near what I’m looking for”.  I spotted the price.  They want £89 for it???

So I said it.

“I’ll make one for you” I told her “it’ll be the colour you want, the hemline you want and it’ll cost you a fraction of that one”.  I showed her Simplicity pattern 3529 and she loved it.

“The thing is” Sheena said “I’d really like it to be backless like the one in the catalogue, to show off my tattoo”.  Hmm, now this pattern doesn’t have a backless version so I was going to have to work out how best to do it.  This would be the biggest design alteration I’d made so I’d really set myself up for a  challenge.  But with a bit of help from my tutor Babs I managed it.
I created a toile first to sort out any “kinks” in my alterations (another first – I’ve never made a toile before).  Sheena and I also decided not to have a tie-back dress as the ties would just obscure her tattoo, defeating the point of having a backless dress.

Raindrops on roses

I am a huge fan of musicals and it happens very easily that songs get stuck in my head and stay there for days, playing again and again and again. I watched “The Sound of Music” for the first time a couple of years ago and loved it. It still only takes a few notes of “Do Re Mi” or “My favourite things” to make me hum the music all day long.

Raindrops on Roses

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things.

A while ago “My favourite things” popped into my head again and whispered: “Why don’t you put together photographs illustrating the first lines?”. Unfortunately I didn’t have anything rose-like in my inventory at that time. But when I saw the rose gown from LIKKA*HOUSE blogged by the Sannomiya Region Fashion Express in summer, I knew I had found the base for my “Raindrops on Roses” picture.

Raindrops on Roses

The roses on this gown are lovely and very detailed, with around 200 prims per rose attachment. It took a while to rez them all the first time I put the gown on, because SL is so screwed up for me at the moment that I sometimes want to cry. But it was so worth it!

As contrast to the red gown I chose the clay skin of the gorgeous “Lily Old Hollywood” skin pack from Exodi, which I bought at one of the last skin fairs. I fell in love with them after I had seen the beautiful pictures at Stacie Pryor’s blog.

Finally I needed rain and it didn’t take me long to come up with the right location. “Crucible” and “Templum ex Obscurum” are two of my all-time favourite sims and if you happen to visit there, please consider donating a few lindens to keep them running. They have a very dark and fairytale-like atmosphere, the landscape is stunning and most importantly, they have plenty of water and rain. Raindrops make roses happy!

We wish you all a wonderful New Year’s Eve, no matter if you party hard or spend it quietly, and of course a happy and successful new year 2010! My personal SL challenge will be to find a bright copper kettle.

I DREAMT OF A WHITE CHRISTMAS

I dreamt of a White Christmas and sure enough I got one! Tuesday night before the big day I went up to Claremore and had a “family Christmas” with my Mom, Dad and Sister before we made the trek down on Wednesday for the actual day. We do this to avoid having to haul all of our presents down to my grandpa’s house in Shawnee because, quite frankly, they wouldn’t fit :/… So Wednesday was the day the big blizzard hit and I have to say driving a drive that should take 2 hours and took closer to 4 in near white out conditions can be a little intense at times. I got some great pictures of the snow, however becuase I don’t want to make this post a novel, I’ll post those pics in a seperate one. Christmas day was amazing! and I know I’m like 6 days behind, but I DID get stranded in Shawnee. I don’t have any pictures from Christmas morning (not that I would post them since we literally do it when we first wake up lol), so a few from family Christmas will have to do. All I can say is I think I made out like a bandit :) ! Hope you had an AMAZING Christmas, and Happy New Years Eve everyone!!!

Yes, she bakes.
Dresses on the dogs was NOT my idea… the brown one (Copper) got revenge by peeing in the floor right next to us until we took it off of her. Clever girl.
Lol this was too funny, I was with my mom in the store and we saw the old Yule Log DVD’s, so she got one for both me and my sister.
You don’t understand, I suck at wraping presents and this was maybe my best one ever!
Okay, adorable.

We got each other some clothes, great minds lol.

My dad got me this great Huichole bracelet from Puerto Vallarta, MX
Shoes :) ! I got a great brown pointy dress pair on Christmas day that I’ll have to photograph and post as well!
A little something picked up and saved for my sister from my time in Dallas
Lol, okay, so I never had Where The Wild Things Are growing up, so… so I wouldn’t feel deprived, she got it for me ha.
I GOT MY IPHONE :D !
Changing of the guard, goodbye Blackberry, I will miss you.

These boots saved my butt! Thank you John Varvatos!!! I’m pretty sure I wore them every single day during the snow.X-Mas tree in Shawnee
And… my sister getting creative… she had boots in the car, it’s beyond me why she chose to put on flats…

I love dressing for cold weather :)

The endless Day

Topshop, unexpectedly amazing dress £18 and earings £2.70

Urban Outfitters, overpriced plasters £3.60 and long-longed for t-shirt £12.60 and door hooks £6.30

Tesco, ingredients for chilli, diet coke and reduced section pizza £8.52

Today I saw madness in the Tesco reduced section, people crazy grabbing at what they could get. I managed a Pizza Express margarita pizza (50p!) before the crowd overwhelmed me.

Quote of the moment : “Life is that thing that is happening to you while you’re making other plans.”- John Lennon

Feeling of the moment : Open to new experiences.

Happy New Year everyone! :D

As negative as new year could actually mean to me, you know time is passing so fast lately, another year has gone by, BUT, i’m trying to stay positive this time, cause thats who i am, i’m optimistic =)

Sooo, the eternal question would still be. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

I’m hestitating between a brown short dress, with flat short boots and tights..Or.. a navy blue and grey dress (short too) and high heels grey boots.. Ummm.. what do you think?

Anyway, school starts next Monday! I’m so dreading it, i hate going to school because its so boring. I cant help but feeling im being controled, the bell rings, everyone moves to the other class, they want us to learn stuff i’m not the least interested in. I mean there are so many important things to learn about life and everything, and then again why cant we chose our subjects? I know what i’m going to get into for college (medecine) so why should i have to study history and philosophy? Ughh. I just remembered i have a maths test on monday! eww.

Not to mention DRAMA!

Anyway, i gotta go watch 90210 now!

Winter in Cairo

When I walked to the IT Mall (hadn’t heard that term before but it apparently exists) the other day, I wore a tshirt, pants, flip flops, and a cotton scarf. I also carried my fleece on one arm. It was 70F. Why, one might ask, did I even bother carrying the fleece? Well, because EVERYONE on the street had on either a sweater or a jacket. 70F is COLD to Cairenes.

My neck and arm were sweating, but I needed the boob coverage to avoid more stares than I got.

Dreaming of a White Christmas.
