my one-of-its-kind blog here. cats love to knit & purl. (Pun intended... knitter's language and a kitty's characteristics... they literally purrrr and knit by chasing after the balls of wool.... ) since then the reason for this blog, my bag knitting/crochetting journal, also showcasing my works. yours truly, the kitten
For those who don't read my other blog (I say that as if anyone is reading this one, either :D), I am back in school. Again. Whee! And omg, I'm old. It is taking so much time to keep up with these two classes. I have to read everything twice and sometimes I feel like I'm still in over my head.
Anyway, between that and the new sewing machine, my knitting time has been shrinking. Even though I've only sewn two things (sock knitting bags):
But I did manage to start my tank!
I ended up tinking like 1382 stitches because I missed a yarn over, but I'm back to just after where I realized I was missing a stitch. If I could just find the time to get through the rest of this lace pattern the rest should zoom by.
Oh, and I did end up making a little bag with some scrap yarn.
Basically, I needed something to work on while reading textbooks, so I started just knitting garter stitch, and from there I decided to make another market bag, only stockinette in the round on giganto needles vs. the openwork patterns of the patterns I'd knit before. I made it just long enough that I thought I'd be able to finish the handles, yet still have room for dinner supplies, but I ran out of yarn before the end... so I hid it with a bow.
What I ended up doing:
CO 45 on size 5 circs in dishcloth cotton, work back and forth in garter for 25 rows.
Then to switch to knitting in the round for the sides -- pick up 12 stitches on one side, 45 along the back, and 12 more to meet back in the beginning. Knit all the way around.
Then, switch to size 13 needles, do a round of k2tog all the way around. From there just knit (stockinette in the round) until the bag is as long as you want it. It's stretchy, but not nearly as stretchy as a lace pattern, so don't make it uber short expecting it to grow.
From there, switch to size 3 dpns, do an applied i-cord across 22 stitches, continuing around for the length of handles you want, and then kitchener together (I picked up this way of handles from , which is way cooler, but not something I could do while reading).
For the bow I used , using the same dpns as the i-cord, and six stitches across, rather than 12, working 6 rows in stockinette before the decreases, and doing k2tog and ssks for decreasing rather than binding off. So, yeah:
Row 1: sl1, k5
Row 2: s1, p5
Row 3: s1, k1, (yo, k1)
Row 4-10: stockinette
Row 11: ssk, k to last 2 stitches, k2tog
Row 12: p across
Repeat 11 & 12 until 2 sts remain on RS
WS: s1, k1
RS: k2tog, cut yarn, pull through, and weave in.
I used the beginning tail of each half of the bow to cinch the bottom of the bow and then attach it to the other half and the bag.
Just big enough to hold pasta, sauce, and salad:
I guess I'm bag obsessed right now. Maybe it's only having three purses in 10 years finally catching up to me.
Tommorow at 9:10 am I am going to do something that I havent done in the three years since Ive been in England : get on a plane for home in The Bahamas. Now I know you must be thinking wow, whoa, how could a person spend such a long time away from a place they love? But if you struggle with a fear of flying and dying like I do then the question becomes self explanatory. I cannot begin to tell you the amount of people over the course of my three years here who have all given me their five cents worth on the joy of flying and how safe airports and airplanes are these days. But anyone with an irrational fear will tell you just how useless such talks and advise are....we nod our heads appropiately, smile accordingly and wander off in my minds to some safer place.
Now I know, based on all that i have just said, why Im contemplating getting on a plane again or how for heavens sake did i ever make it to England in the first place. I flew of course, clutching my chest with my bible in my hands picturing the love on my partner's face when i made it through on the other end. But i have watched countless plane crash movies since then and drastic news stories that make me never want to leave my house again and I said to myself either I can spend the rest of my life in fear or I can step out with a leap of faith and my trust in God. Id like to go to heaven of course, but preferably after Id had my kids, watch them grow up, move to the country and lose all my teeth ehehe. Especially not before Ive seen my first royalty check.
Ive taken my antianxiety meds, ive had all my friends over praying for me and wishing me luck, ive even kept the tv on the God channel and change some of my money over in american travellers' cheques. But I havent packed my bags yet or print out my eticket that i bought via BA online. I did however ring BA three times in two days to find out what they did for nervous flyers and how much money they reckon i could get back if i cancel my ticket in time. ONe button and all my troubles and worries would be instantly over...never minding that i will lose uo to 800 pounds in fees!
Do you know how I feel? I feel like someone who's on death row and they have been told that they will walk to the gas chambers by the end of the week...so everything i do and taste is like im dead already and theres no point or use to anything. My chest aches, my head hurts, my lungs feel like it's on fire, the roof of my mouth is dry, ive drunk a bottle of champagne with my med to no effect..nothing is getting through to me...its like...thinking youre going off a cliff and people are telling you ooo dont worry about it...have some alcohol or meds to numb your pain on the way done....no one understands what im going through...except for one of my good friends who have given up flying herself...
of course id like to see my family and friends again in the Bahamas...swim in the sea for a change...lay on a beach...have home made food..but i cant get pass those 8 hours that idbe stuck in the air on a plane...why am i putting myself through this when i can just press a button and make everything go away...i hate these condescending people most of all who make soothing noises and say oo it will be alright...flying is safer than driving....well who gives a monkey butt what is safer than what...i prefer to be on the ground thank you..
will i go through with it...honestly...at this moment...i dont know...i would love to...i would love to hear that announcement...welcome to nassau international airport...id kiss the ground hundred times over and chant to my God..but i think im going to need something much more stronger...my imagination has gone overboard...way overboard...please say a prayer for me if you can and remember too...and if im still alive by tommorow evening... i thank you with all of my heart...
now its time to pack my bags before these meds wear off completely!
And let's not forget the Cosmopolitans :D Ah, those were the days. Sometimes (often after another bout of binge-watching SATC), I feel more 35 than twenty-ish.
But in a very good way of course!
Last night, Stephie and I, together with The Girls, went to catch the Sex and the City Movie. We'd been anticipating it for days, and were practically bouncing with excitement.
With all the write-ups on the movie already, from lengthy reviews to careful dissection of the wonderful, wonderful clothes, we think it unnecessary to add our two cents worth. Let's just say that if you're a SATC fan(atic), you'll like it well enough :)
And for nothing else, the clothes themselves is definitely worth your money for the ticket!
Initially we had the best of intentions to play dress up for the movie - its the perfect opportunity to finally wear that Carrie/Miranda/Samantha/Charlotte outfit you'd conjured up in your mind! However, office dress codes and sheer laziness in the morning got in the way.
Still, Stephie ended up with a Charlotte-ish outfit:
Dress: ness
Cardigan: Zara
Pearls: Made by a friend
Hairband: Random shop in Taipei
Shoes: Random shop in Penang
Bag: LV Trevi
On the other hand, I didn't look like anyone (in the movie or otherwise *lol*)
Dress: A shop on Haji Lane
Bag + Shoes: Melbourne, Australia
Tights: TopShop
Horseshoe necklace: Helen
After the movie, we were off to the Arena for those Lycee martinis we wrote about previously.
Carrie debates the opener while brooding her most recent predictable romantic drama with Big.
Yes, I just returned from the midnight showing of Sex & the City. Returned to my own Carrie-esque moment. My glasses aren't as stylish and I'm typing on a MacBook Pro (not her PowerBook), but all the same I'm typing and sipping pomegranate juice straight from the bottle. Alone in a single bedroom apartment during the wee hours of the morning listening to the thoughts in my head.
While awkwardly poised over an unfortunate puddle covering the ground surrounding my car door (I was wearing Miu Mius; the next move was not to be taken lightly.), I realized that I was surprised to have loved the movie. I am, after all, the lone person on the planet who enjoyed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. (I thought it was fun! I expected nothing more. Which is to say, I expected nothing better.) Who am I to feel any sort of rights to review, really?
But here I am. Brooding. Having actually enjoyed something I traveled and waited hours for. Though the writing served up plenty of bad puns, it was the best extended episode one could have asked for to conclude the girls' stories. The pacing was good, humor was well-interspersed, and I'm sure the producers are happy to have gotten all that product placement in.
Six seasons. Four women. One city. Forty-one men. One woman. One adorable Chinese adoptee.
Annoying Carrie. Annoying Charlotte. Relatable Miranda. Refreshing Samantha.
I laughed. I clapped. I almost cried a couple of times. (I also wondered on a couple of occasions why there were so many straight men in the house, but that's not for me to ask.)
There's a lot of fugly going on in the costume and accessories department *cough* Jennifer Hudson's purse *cough* but there's also definitely a lot of high fashion going on in the styling. You still get that sense of "How do these women actually afford these things?" coupled with a lot of "OMG I want to be her friend..." And The City - Oh, the city. I don't know why, but I always have a soft spot for stories that make the place as much as a character as any of the actors. By no surprise, the focus of the movie is all about the women. Men don't act much in the movie as much as they just fulfill their roles. There isn't a whole lot of character development to be expected of anyone in the film. They all do exactly what you'd expect them to in order to patch things in up in a package of two and a quarter hours.
I don't know why I feel so satisfied right now. Perhaps it is because I'm very conscientious about where I am at the moment - in my love life, in my job search, in my friendships, in my family - and I am really happy about all of it. For the past week I've had panicky bouts of choice overload, but after seeing a cinematic production solely dedicated to neurotic, histrionic women, I feel centered. Relative to their drama, I am in a great place. (I will probably buy the DVD.)
Fans of the series, go see the movie. Non-fans of the movies, it's not as insufferable as you think it might be. In either case, you should enjoy this Christina does a fucking impeccable imitation of Samantha there. Lemme just also take a moment to say that Candance Bushnell's book is not as sugary and glamorous as the series or the movie now in theaters. If you can't handle overdoses of magenta, the book may be more your style than you'd ever realized.
