Plane bags

Here's the assortment of goodies for the kids on the airplane ride. airplane bags the playdoh was definitely a big hit. Inside of the little books are various things I drew for them to color and questions to answer about thanksgiving and the plane. I think I may have had way too much fun making them. Since I was sitting with the baby, Michael was sitting with the kids in the opposing aisle...which meant he was in charge of keeping them occupied. He didn't go through the books with them, so we didn't really get into them till we got back home after Thanksgiving. But when we did they thought it was pretty cool. Now I need a new reason to make books for them.

Floral Tote

One of my first creations since picking up knitting again this year. My very first creation is a super-belated birthday for a friend, and it is now halfway around the world from me. I've asked her to send a picture of it for this blog.

Floral Tote Bag

I took a long time to complete this bag. The more accurate version is, I made the knitted shell about six months ago, in a burst of crafting madness. Then summer came, the mountains and rivers of Colorado beckoned, and I put knitting on the backburner. When the aspens turned golden my literary muse fired up - I probably have enough lyric essays for a short chapbook (in the process of revising and submitting to literary journals now) - and I spent most of the fall writing, writing, and writing. No complaints about that. Then, about two weeks ago, my brain overheated and words did not register in my head as I read them. So I came back to knitting and completing what I started in the spring. Rummaging through yarn, dreaming up projects, buying lining material.

I used size 8 needles to make this one. Cast on 60 stitches. Stockinette stitch. Every ten rows, drop one stitch on both ends. As for length, I prefer something a little deeper, something that I can carry a medium-sized notebook in, in addition to the usual purse glasses cellphone keys. I probably cast off at about 40 stitches. I sewed the lining by hand, mostly because I don't have a machine and didn't want to bother friends with it. I like the effect of handstitch though, the effective but slightly chaotic line, instead of a robotic standard of perfection. The handle, however, is not quite strong. After using it the first time, I realized that I had to reinforce it triply. Now it doesn't seem like it's going to fall apart.

I need to experiment with handles. I've a variation of this one for my next bag. The shell's ready, and I just bought the lining material (and more yarn) today.

PUMA x Lydia Hearst Bags

With the limited run of the Puma Lydia Bag by Heatherette produced for February’s New York Fashion Week only 100 bags were available and most were given to Hearst’s friends. PUMA and Lydia Hearst has teamed up once again to make the bags mainstream, this time for a more accessibly priced bag and a fitness line. The tennis racket-inspired bag will hit stores this Friday, November 30th and retails for $125 available in all of Puma’s concept stores.

Found!

Thanks to everyone for their kind words via email and comments. We found the bike with it's training wheels all bent up but otherwise okay. The lovely community constable has taken fingerprints and has met with some local trouble making ba%^$#@ds youth to give them a telling off - he's pretty sure of who did it and he is only 12. All's well that ends well as they say. I'm ready for a cup of tea and a lie down but we just have to get through this weekend. Knack Market is on this Saturday 10-2 at Berhampore School then after that a friend's 40th then on Sunday it's Great Aunty Nora's 97th!

More good news is I think I have a tutorial in the making!! It's for a Japanese knot bag a I saw in Japan and then again in Melbourne. I had a good look and thought "I could do that". Yesterday I made a calico prototype and it worked! Yay!

Here's an old poem of mine about lost objects:

HOLE

In the cold water
the ring slips
from her finger
to the sand.

A whole hole;
what is the life
of a missing
object?

The hole slipped
down into
the rings’
depths

There is only
so much space
under the rose bush
by the front path.

Chestnut Hill Bag

Another Christmas present completed!  The Chestnut Hill Bag, made from Joel Dewberry fabric.  It is so handy when fabrics come ready-coordinated for you!

The pattern is Vogue 7812 - which may now be out of print.  I've used this pattern before, and the resulting bags are a nice size and shape.  Here's the inside:

Magnetic catch closure; internal zip pocket on one side; patch pocket and key fob on the other.

I added purse/bag feet and used fast-to-fuse to make a sturdier bag base.

As usual, the exterior has interfacing and pellon to provide structure, while maintaining a soft appearance.  The silver rings on the handles add a nice touch too.

I think I'm finally on the homeward stretch with holiday sewing - but there's still lots more to do!

lydia hearst + puma = more lydia bags!

lydia-hearst-puma-2007.jpg

As we mentioned back in June, Puma has revisited its partnership with model Lydia Hearst to release another round of Lydia bags -- a designer take on the racquet grip bag from the company's French 77 line. The unveiling happened at Puma's Union Square store yesterday.

Unlike the limited-edition bag Ms. Hearst designed with Heatherette back in February (that's her above, left), this round of bags runs $125 a pop and is constructed from eco-friendly materials (read: no leather). That earlier version was made of custom leather; most of 100 were given away to friends of Hearst, and the leftovers went on sale for $500 each.

So how did Hearst feel designing for the masses? "It's much easier to create a high-end bag than a mass market bag that everyone can afford," she shared with WWD. "But by looking at the bag, you wouldn't know it's mass market. I wanted to make sure anyone and everybody can enjoy my designs."

Here's a photo of former rentboy (and Marc Jacobs' ex) Jason Preston. And a photo of what the Union Square store.

The bag comes in two colorways: black/bright blue and silver. They go on sale on Friday at Puma concept stores.

More to come: Hearst and Puma will also team up for an eco-friendly activewear line to launch in the fall of 2008.
