SafeSax is what?

safeHah! Safesax it's a site that sells bags and accessories that promote the rules of Safe Sex. How interesting is that name for a site. What will I come across next? It is never moring scouring the internet... Check them out though for some entertaining stuff (made of condoms!!) and a wothwhile cause. As someone personally battling Cervical Cancer (early stages) I would recommend abstaining from Sex all together unless you have the HPV Vaccine already. Seriously! It isn't preventable any other way and it can kill you with cancer. I think in the 1980's people got used to the idea that condoms prevented AIDS and that was the only non-curable STD so if you use a condom you can fuck anything that moves. Well I didn't do that, but I did have a healthy sex life in several relationships and even with the constant use of condoms, I have High Risk HPV and Early Stage Cervical Cancer. HPV is also thought to be a cause of colon, breast, head and neck, prostate and lung cancers. SO take this stuff seriously or it will come back to haunt you later in life when it isn't cureable, and not in a good way.

Frugality, Frenchy Bag, and other stuff

I have been reading a lot of blogs lately, A LOT of blogs. If they come from clicking a link from my sister's blog, they usually come from someone who is VERY environmentally conscious and frugal and usually vegetarian or vegan.  Most of those blogs inspire me to also be environmentally conscious (I try to recycle EVERYTHING that I possibly can) be more frugal, but NOT become vegetarian.  I slipped a little yesterday though. Lately my shoes have been bothering me. They are falling apart and because I sort of drag my feet when I walk, I realized that these shoes have become worn on the outer edges of the heels. So, I decided to go shoe shopping after work. It was fun and I found three pairs of shoes on sale that fit, are comfortable and will work for work shoes or casual shoes.  Well, that was fine, but then I decided to go over to Ross Dress for Less, since it was in the same shopping center and since I needed new clothes anyway.  I went a little crazy in there, although I did get some great bargains.  My DH didn't really flinch too hard when I told him I bought some clothes, he just wanted to know "How much?"  He knows that I haven't bought new clothes in a really long time and this will be a good way to transition to my new job.  So, I slipped on the frugality part, but on the brighter side, we have saved money on groceries, probably about $50 this month. That's pretty good! It just took a little planning.

Now, about the sewing stuff, my DH also consented to let me order my birthday present early.  It is the Frenchy Bag kit from the Fat Quarter Shop.  This was their Friday special last week and it so fits me and my love of bags and Amy Butler fabric!  I told DH that even though my birthday isn't until the end of October, I needed to order the kit RIGHT NOW because they might not have any more by that time. He agreed and so I ordered it!  Yeah! He only made one condition, I have to wait until my actual birthday to open the package. That's fine with me. I have PLENTY of other projects to keep me busy.

Update on Christmas projects: I have pinned the binding strips on the patchwork blanket.  I hate doing binding so I have been putting this off for a few days. By the time I got it all pinned on last night, I was too tired to even sew it on!  I am trying to find an easier technique for finishing the binding that looks better than the traditional flip, fold, and stitch in the ditch method. I really don't know how to do the hand sewing so you can bet I won't be trying that any time soon.  Plus, I would really like to get this thing done, BEFORE Christmas and if I have to hand stitch something, it won't be.  I also found some free patterns for very cool fall/autumn/Halloween wall hangings and was tempted to start working on those, but then I remembered ALL the projects I already have to those patterns will go in my file for the future.  I think I will stop by Plain Jane's Folk Art Fabric store today to get some yardage so that I can complete my mom's Charm Bag. She found a charm pack with beautiful fall fabrics and asked me to make her a bag just like mine. This is what my charm bag looks like.

Charm Bag with Chez Moi FabricI used a charm pack called Chez Moi and they have a new line of darker colors coming out and I just love that one!  I can never look at charm packs in the same way ever again. So, I need to get the yardage for the handles and lining plus a little magnetic snap. And if they have any fusible fleece, I need to get some of that as well.  That means I have to go to a fabric store after work, oh darn! But the best part is that it is for a Christmas present so I have a justification for going there. Yeah! (As if I really needed an excuse to go to a fabric store. I just wish I could find a job that requires me to visit fabric stores all the time as part of my research. Hmm, don't know what job that would be. I am also feeling very snazzy today because of the new clothes that I purchased yesterday. I feel very put together and downright cute!  I hope that during my week off next week I will be able to actually make a couple more skirts for work and maybe even a nice top. I am not really very experienced with garment construction so this could be a whole new adventure! Well, until next time.

Happy Quilting,

 Anna L.

A weekend away

Early tomorrow morning I'll be catching a train to the nearby town of Nottuln, for my Late Orientation Camp.

I'll be meeting up with the other exchange students in my area, and we'll be staying until Sunday afternoon in a youth hostel.

There are five other girls here on exchange, and they come from all over the world: China, Japan, Czech Republic, Norway, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The American girl from Michigan is so fun to talk to, last time we met at orientation she was telling me about how much trouble she was having "Germanifying" her wardrobe.

"I can't wear my Birkenstock's in public, I can't wear my hoodies, I can't wear my jeans --"

I feel her pain. The casual American attire just doesn't fit here in Europe. I feel constantly as if I'm not dressed up enough -- my beloved t shirts are constrained to being worn only within the perimeters of the house.

In any case, I look forward to seeing the Michigan girl again this weekend, and seeing how she's doing managing her wardrobe and other aspects of life.

Till then!

Travel-issues

What to wear, what to pack, how to pack? How many pair of shoes, depends on what we're gonna do during the days. Laptop or not laptop? One big suitcase or two smaller ones?

This is the worst thing about travelling.

Aunt Sally’s Hat Cupboard

hat1.jpg

Aunt Sally's hat cupboard was full of interesting caps. In fact, her caps did amazing things. When she wore her Easter bonnet, the Sun came out and flowers started to grow. When she put on her woolly Winter hat, everything turned into snow. Aunt Sally liked her all her hats, but the one she tended to prefer, was the magical maths hat, made out of magical fur. You wouldn't believe what she could do, when wearing her hats, things multiplied by two ! The cupboard door was soon so large, that Aunty Sally could use it as a barge and charge. Aunt Sally had lot of maths jobs around the house, so she put on her magical furry maths hat (although she looked like a mouse !). She wanted to measure the size of the hall ... wearing her furry maths hat, it was easy to see, how furry maths magic makes things treble by three. Aunt Sally couldn't decide, whether to add, subtract, multiply or divide. She put on her maths hat and easy as A B C, everything in the hat cupboard started to spin magically and mathematically. In the kitchen, Aunt Sally wanted to bake a cake, but she really had no idea how much sugar the recipe would take. But as soon as she put her hat on, the cake was quickly tastily done. Although, Aunt Sally's furry maths hat just about covered her ears (she hadn't done this much maths homework in years !).

hat1.jpg 1. If Aunt Sally's hat had a diameter of 25 cm, work out the dimension of the radius and circumference of the hat, using the formula for working out the distance of a arc.

hat1.jpg 2. When Aunt Sally's hat was rolled into three, it measured 7 cm wide. How wide is normally ?

hat1.jpg 3. Aunt Sally knit a hat. Three centimetres required one quarter of a ball of wool. If the hat was 21 cm wide, how much wool did she need ?

hat1.jpg 4. Aunt Sally dropped her hat in a well that measured 500 m deep. She noticed that steps lead down, but still it was only 20% towards the hat. How long did the rope need to be, therefore ?

hat1.jpg 5. As Aunt Sally put her hat on a hatstand, she knocked off 50% of the 12 hats. How many were left ?

hat1.jpg 6. Aunt Sally's hat shrank in the wash ! It was 60 cm high but reduced in size by one fifth. How big did it then become ?

hat1.jpg 7. Aunt Sally was 175 cm tall, but wearing her hat, she increased by 10 cm - how high did she then become ?

hat1.jpg 8. Aunt Sally's hat cost £1.25, how much change did she receive from £10.00 ?

hat1.jpg 9. In the hat cupboard, Aunt Sally's hat span to the floor at a speed of 20 cm / 3 seconds. How long did he take to reach the ground, 3 m lower ? Give your answer in seconds and minutes.

hat1.jpg 10. Aunt Sally wanted to open a hat shop. She bought 150 hat boxes, but when she looked, she only had enough hats to fill 90% of them - how many is that ? How many boxes, therefore, were empty ?

Answers :

1. If circumference = 4 arc then arc = r x degrees = 4(12.5 x 90) = 4 500

2. 21 cm

3. 1 3 / 4 balls

4. Total distance - steps = 500 - (500 / 100 x 20 = 100) = 400 m ;

5. 6

6. 60 - (60 / 5 = 12) = 48 cm

7. 185 cm

8. £8.75

9. 3 (3 x 100 / 20 = 15) = 45 seconds; 0.75 mins

10. a) 150 / 100 x 90 = 135 b) 15

Chocolate…

I'm bored. I'm bored and I want chocolate. *sigh* This attitude is definitely not going to get me back into my jeans for winter. :)

So far today, I have picked up the house, 1 load of laundry, made the beds, swept the floor, unloaded an reloaded the dishwasher, made coffee and more biscuits and hashbrowns. I have read almost all of my Bible reading for today and completed my Sunday School lesson. I also briefly prepared for TeamKid tonight, but now I'm bored.

I saw an awesome idea yesterday in a magazine I was browsing. It is a clothing swap. Basically, you get a group of women together and bring clothes that you don't want anymore or can't wear anymore. You can have a certain number of items for each to bring and then you all just "shop" around and pick out the same amount to take home for free. I would LOVE to do this with the ladies of our church. I have a feeling that this could turn into a huge undertaking though and it would be easier to have things sorted for browsing. Anyone else think this is a good idea? We could also donate whatever is left over and even turn this into a similar project for kids.

It makes me excited just thinking about it. I would think that the more people, the better it would turn out and more likely that we would all be able to get clothing in the appropriate size.
