Luxury of choice: which water, which container, why?

Having noticed SIGG bottles in Whole Foods Market last week, for the first time, and reading Darmok's excellent post on drinking water, afterwards, I was prompted to look SIGG up online. As usual, Swiss engineering is impressive and thorough, and their marketing is appropriately stylish, allowing a huge amount of personalisation: they even had a SIGG design contest this year, which appeals to artistic teenagers!

Now I find that my daughter's new school requires a 1 litre water bottle for sports. It is on the official Read the rest of this page »

santoro slices and lobs his way to five sets

The match of the 2007 U.S. Open's first week will likely be tonight's five-set -- that's 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 -- win by hometown hero James Blake over Frenchman Fabrice Santoro.

The Frenchman is nicknamed "The Magician" for his shotmaking abilities; his arsenal of slices, lobs, and angles created by two-handed grips on both wings regularly frustrate his opponents (and have propelled him to Doubles Grand Slam titles on more than a few occasions).

Santoro is also known for his wacky Lacoste outfits -- we're talking almost Vince Spadea-level here. But for some reason it works on Fabrice (perhaps because it goes with his unconventional playing style).

FYI: His candy shirt from tonight's match has been in his closet for most of this year (I remember seeing it on him as far back as Miami). It's just a piece from the company's casual collection (i.e., it's not a Lacoste Sport polo).

Buy: Lots of folks are asking where they can get this shirt. Most retailers have already removed this from their inventory since it's an item from a past season. Sadly, I have no other leads right now but I am still waiting to hear back from two people. If you can help us out, write me: tennisCBH AT gmail DOT com. Also, there are other companies who've produced similar styles. Artful Dodger, etc. You might be better off shopping that way.

fashion outlawed

saggy trousers are a big no-no in some areas of the u.s. a few small towns in the deep south have passed indecency ordinances to counter what the local politicians seemingly believe to be pornographic fashion. saggy jeans and the hip-hop look. others see it as a thinly veiled racism.

Louis Vuitton goes Ugg?

vuitton

Aitor Throup - inspiring

He is being called the next big influencer....well I think that is an absolute truth..... Earlier on it was Issaye Miyaki and Yoji Yamamotto who brought a revolution to fashion, and the Japanese perspective became a newer way of looking at clothing. Aitor, also brings a fresh way of looking at clothing, by taking characters, be it comic or from mythology and representing it in the form of clothing. All artists have a signature style when drawing the characters’ anatomy and postures. Aitor Throup takes inspiration from his characters and then making a garment pattern based on the pose of the character’s form in motion. He calls this process, “branding through construction”. Here he explains branding through construction: “The ‘tops’ (shirts, jackets, coats etc) I create are all cut from a pattern/block developed from my own sculptural pattern cutting process: First, I design a character in a specific pose; then, I create a miniature sculpture of the character, which I then cover in fabric, allowing the darts and seams to be dictated by the structure itself. So, all my shirts, jackets etc. look like generic garments at first, but on closer inspection, their construction lines are all equally distorted and seemingly misplaced.”

It is inspiring to see, learn and perceive this new way of making clothes, and it also mind-boggles me to the limit less possibilities of a simple silhouette made interesting just by placement of darts, and seams in a whole new way. The best part is that, the collection that brought about such rave reviews was inspired from the Hindu Gods….like Ganesha, Shiva, Garuda …etc and to my astonishment, the way these gods have been interpreted, I think no Indian designer could have done it better. I’m sure now they will get “inspired by his collection”, but the originality is lacking in this country. The combination of structural functionality and fashion is his forte. He brings characters to life, I won’t call Hindu gods like Ganesha, Shiva …and all characters, but in a sense they are characters of Hindu mythology, and u can see them come to life in a bizarre functional casual manner. Here are a few examples of his work.

Brilliance comes through a process that is followed; it cannot just spring from anywhere. But for a process to be followed, what is required is time and dedication, without the being concerned with money generation or any other petty issue hounding our mundane lives. But even if a person really wants to take the time out and devote themselves to stretching their metal capabilities and testing to what heights can be reach; who gives you the time to really go into the depth and come up with something new and inventive. Here everyone wants to follow the safe route and promote sales more than creativity, so are we actually killing the creative instincts of a person, ad creating these “copy – paste” people. Those individuals who run their own business, get so engrossed in profit generation that they actually forget the reason for getting into a creative line, while others working for them can’t really do anything without the boss’s permission. So aren’t we stuck in a visicious circle? But seeing people like Aitor , is refreshing and restores my faith that there is still a way .  But The question is that will Aitor actually survive this or in the next 5 years will he also make his childhood dreams and charcters  more “saleable”????????
